Introducing your new Sports & Holistic Massage therapist, Georgie Russell.
Georgie first became interested in Massage therapy after working in a Chiropractic and Physiotherapy clinic in Cheltenham. Seeing how manual therapy was able to improve someone’s quality of life and get them out of pain was eye-opening. In particular, Georgie was interested in Sports Massage and how it can be adapted to suit anyone from an office worker, or a postpartum mum, to a bodybuilder and despite the name, Sports Massage is not just for sporty people! It’s for everyone.
Massage experience
Encouraged by observing patients’ progress, Georgie received regular massages to successfully treat her chronic headaches and jaw pain (TMJ), which she had suffered from since childhood. Shortly after finding this relief, Georgie took up trail running and while training for her first 10K and subsequent trail half marathons, Georgie saw first-hand how sports massage can aid performance and prevent recurring injuries.
After signing up to my first 10K and facing some training difficulties including feeling lethargic and repeatedly spraining my ankle, I booked my first sports massage… and never looked back! In sports massage, the therapist looks at how your body moves by doing a range of orthopaedic & functional tests. During my massage session, these tests showed up a few areas that needed strengthening and gave me some rehab exercises to do at home. After these massage sessions, I actually enjoyed training, I felt more energetic, my legs felt stronger and running 10K no longer felt like a gruelling slog.
My first sports massage experience – Georgie, Exmoor Massage
Georgie trained at the Cotswold Academy in Cirencester and is fully insured, and a full member of the Federation of Holistic Therapies. Exmoor Massage Clinic is based in Wootton Courtenay on Exmoor, which lies below the highest point of Exmoor, Dunkery Beacon.
I’m very lucky that some of the most important people in my life are manual therapists, my fiance is a chiropractor, my best friend is a physio and I receive regular treatment from an osteopath friend. All of these people have taught me so much and continue to inspire me. Massage is a great complementary treatment to physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathy and I hope to work with many of the local practitioners on Exmoor over the future. So if you’re reading this, please do get in touch!
How Massage can complement other therapies
Georgie grew up in Scotland and Dartmoor before moving to Exmoor aged 7 and spent most of her youth riding (and falling off) ponies. Eventually going to university in Newcastle to study Spanish, French & Portuguese and living abroad in Brazil and Spain. Now, she’s gone full circle and is back on Exmoor for good. You can often find her hiking with her dogs!
